The bank does not function as a commercial bank, and has the responsibility of governing the monetary policies of the country. The president of the Republic appoints the governor.   The Bank of Mozambique therefore has to ensure the value of domestic currency through the adoption of measures to ensure price stability. The institutional values comprise the basic cultural values of the organization and represent a set of principles within which the bank operates in order to achieve the qualitative performance and the intended institutional success. Vision of the Bank of Mozambique is to ensure price stability and the expansion of financial services throughout the country; promote a competitive, healthy and sound financial sector; and face with success the challenges of regional integration and dynamics of international development. In pursuit of this, the Bank shall uphold the following core missions:  • Banker to the Government;  • Adviser to the Government in financial domain;  • Controller and manager of foreign exchange and monetary policies;  • Manager of the country’s external reserves;  • Intermediary in monetary international relations; and  • Supervisor of financial institutions. The Bank's head office is in Maputo, the capital city of Mozambique. The bank is currently represented by regional branches in Beira and Nampula provinces and single branches in Pemba, Lichinga, Quelimane, Tete and Maxixe cities.
