The Bank of
Mexico (Spanish: Banco de México), abbreviated BdeM or Banxico, is Mexico's
central bank and lender of last resort. |
|
|
|
Its main
function is to provide domestic currency to the Mexican economy and its main
priority is to ensure the stability of the domestic currency’s purchasing
power. Its other functions are to promote both the sound development of the
financial system and the optimal functioning of the payment systems.
Monetary policy is the set of
actions taken by Banco de México to influence interest rates and inflation
expectations in order to make price behavior consistent with the goal of
ensuring an environment of low and stable inflation. By pursuing an
environment of low and stable inflation, Banco de México contributes to
create the appropriate conditions for both sustained growth and the creation
of permanent jobs. Banco de México permanently monitors the institutions that
comprise this system, promotes reforms to the current legislation, and
issues regulations according to its law. |
Monetary policy decisions affect expectations for the future performance of
the economy and, in particular, of prices. Economic agents determine their
prices based on these expectations. Inflation expectations affect interest
rates and these, in turn, affect aggregate supply and demand through the
channels mentioned previously. Illustrating the role of inflation
expectations in the economy, firms’ previsions regarding costs and future
revenues are key to determining the prices and levels of production of goods
and services offered. |
